Shri Devi Nrithyaradhana Kala Kendra is a Bharatanatyam dance institution dedicated to the teaching, practice and preservation of one of India's most ancient and revered classical dance forms.

The institution welcomes students of all ages and backgrounds who wish to embark on a journey of artistic and personal growth through Bharatanatyam — a dance form that weaves together devotion, discipline, expression and grace.

A Tradition of Learning

Bharatanatyam is taught in the spirit of the guru-shishya parampara — the traditional Indian method of knowledge passed from teacher to student through direct, personal guidance. This approach emphasises patience, repetition and deep understanding over quick results.

Students begin with the fundamentals — posture, basic steps (adavus) and hand gestures (mudras) — before progressing to more complex compositions and expressive dance (abhinaya). The learning is gradual, structured and respectful of each student's individual pace.

Beyond technique, the approach nurtures an appreciation for the cultural, spiritual and artistic dimensions of Bharatanatyam, connecting the dance to its roots in devotion and storytelling.

What is Bharatanatyam?

Bharatanatyam is one of the eight recognised classical dance forms of India, with origins in the temples and courts of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Its name is derived from three Sanskrit words: Bhava (expression), Raga (melody) and Tala (rhythm), with Natyam meaning dance.

The dance form is characterised by its precise geometry, strong lines, intricate footwork, expressive hand gestures (mudras) and nuanced facial expressions (abhinaya). A Bharatanatyam performance typically includes elements of pure dance (nritta), expressive dance (nritya) and dramatic storytelling (natya).

Rooted in devotion, Bharatanatyam was traditionally performed in temple settings as an offering to the divine. Today, it is practised and performed worldwide, cherished both for its spiritual depth and its artistic sophistication.
